double page spread page 2

same as page 1- yet to be added.

double page spread page 1

again everything is yet to be added of a full analysis of my final page.

I have chosen an image from Q magazine to get a layout idea from for my double page spread.

I like this double page spread as there is a nice balance between images and text and like my magazine i dont have a image strong enough to use as a full page side of the spread. Conventionally in other magazines i have looked at, they use a full side of image with lots of columned text. However this style works as well and is still just as effective without looking like its too much to read.

To start with my double page spread ideas i collected a series of images i had taken of the person on the front that may be fitting. I thought about festival life as well as band and instrument use. Here is a slide show of the images i collected that i thought would be fitting with a festival/personal life story.

making my contents page

Similarly i have had a look at other contents pages to see a style i like and think will be fitting so that i can use a similar layout.

I need to edit this post at school as the format was not correctly saved in order to post and edit them at home...
also i have other versions at school to show my stages.

My final front cover

Here i have gone through each part of my magazine and tried to explain why i have done the things i have and why in that position.
If i were to do this magazine again i would have added more stories onto the left side rather than pictures and also maybe made the front image more interesting with different colours to allow a bit more freedom.
I have tried to follow conventions closly and use a similar layout to magazines that are already successful yet i do not feel my page is as strong as them.
I like how i have picked my colour scheme by taking colours from clothing and what you find on the image.
My magazine, at a glance seems a bit to bottom heavy- everything seems to be crammed in at the bottom or just alot darker. I should think about what i could use at the top of my page more or whether changing the positioning of my main image would be better.
Another thing i feel i have done well is the language used in a colloquial manner to make it easy and interesting to read for my target audience with a successful balance of images to writing.

Making my front cover

During the making of my front cover, i chose to have a comparison cover up which was one of NME issues.

I am going to use a similar layout style to this as i feel my image i am using is similar to this one which means the same positioning should work just as well.

Firstly with my image i have looked at having a grey backgroud compared to a white one to see if it works better. I had also thought about having a different setting such as bricks or patterns and a background, but felt this may look to busy and be unconventional for this genre.

Firstly i cut the image out from the white background in photoshop using the magnetic lasso tool to then paste it into a grwy background before experimenting with text and pictures.
I felt that for my colour scheme using purples, white would be a better back ground for this and allow it to stand out more. Also the black on his clothing with the grey background looked a bit drowning and dull. I felt this was a good exercise to do as it allowed me to see what themes worked and what didnt.

Final font idea

After experimenting with the fonts before on my draft pages, i realised it was more effective to go with a more simple font from photoshop and use a purple outline around it which fitted with my idea and colour scheme of taking colour from the main images on the front page. This is the final design of my font idea.

Photoshop edits of camp sites

For my contents page i was thinking of background images, heading backgrounds, arrow fillers etc that would all portray a festival vibe. I decided to choose a sepia image for the heading to add a block of colour and action. i changed the original image of colours to sepia to ensure that my colour scheme was not to much. Here is my experiment with different parts of the image trying basic colour schemes. One in sepia, One in black and white.
Photobucket
i feel that the sepia tone will add more festival vibe to the contents page whereas the black and white may get lost within the content and colour of this page. Also the sepia image is better quality to the black and white image which gives it a more proffesional look.

I then looked at the image of the camp site i had taken and experimented with the colours so that if i were to use this image, it wouldnt be as bright i would add warm tones and shadows into it. This is my result.

Contents page Image ideas

Seen as my magazine features alot of information on festivals, i have decided to include images from my own experiances at festivals to create the feel and image of it being a summer guide. It was better to use first hand images to create this as it shows my own material being used and not just the ability to copy and paste from google images.
Here are the pictures from V and Reading festival that i have chosen to pick from to brighten up my magazine and add the festival style to it.

Successful image from Band

Here is my most successful image that i could experiment using as a potential front cover.

I have again edited it using photoshop to experiment with the lighting again and cropping.

However the composition of the image and the image itself, i do not feel work as strongly to go on the front of my indie magazine as it gives the look of a more acoustic set with the shades of colour and positioning.

I then asked a source of 20 people's opinions within my target audience these two questions:
1. which is more fitting to an Indie magazine genre and
2. Which would be more effective to see on the front page of a magazine
Out of image a- the male and image b- this one
the results were:
Questions one: a- 17 b- 3
Question two a-14 b-6
