Extra Band images

I decided to think about the possibility of featuring a band on my front page to give it more character. I took a few shots of a band but felt none could really be powerful enough for a front page image however i will use them within my contents page and possibly a double page spread on them. Here is a slide show of those images.

Chosen front cover image

I have decided to use an image taken against a white background positioned to the right of the photo so that it fits with the conventions of a magazine to have the text and story lines on the left hand side.
I have made sure my image is fitting with the brief as it is 3/4 medium close up. If i could do a better shoot i would have involved better lighting and possibly more band memebers to fill the front cover and make it look more exciting. However seen as this image leaves me with alot of room to experiment on my front page, i feel it can still be as successful and be clear at the same time.
From thinking about colour schemes after picking my image i wanted to make them quite neutral and not to bright and over powering. Colours such as blues, purples, whites and blacks would fit in with this style image however it may not work throughout after looking through other pictures for the next pages.
Here is my edited version of the front cover image created using photoshop.

Front Cover Images

I tried to use a persona that had a specific image similar to current acts in the indie genre. I thought about hair, clothing and pose during taking the images to try and make it a stereotypical act to the fitting genre as it would look more conventional.

Here are some of the images i took and had to choose from for certain pages...

Mock up magazine ideas

Here are some outline plans i made of all the ideas i had with layouts of pages during my research stages.

I found it hard to draw out a front cover without knowing what image to use and the proportions. Therefore i didnt have many ideas to draw out so i have posted my most likely one rather than all my drafts. I will then after looking at images etc experiment more with colour schemes and possibly use colours that are featured in the image to make a more fitting scheme.

For my contents page, i had more ideas of ways i could display text and pictures and also there was more independant choice as to where things can go etc as conventions of a contents page differ due to what type of magazine you are doing. These are some of the ideas i had.

Similarly to the contents pages i felt that i could do alot more experimenting with the double page spreads as i had a large space to fill. I had to consider what balance between pictures and writing looked fitting and also whether or not i had a strong enough image to fill a whole a4 side of the interview with. I will have to ensure my images and strong and eye catching and also fitting with the story line. These pages could turn out to be the weakest of my 4 due to the amount of writing and freedom you can have to go outside the conventions. Here are my mock up ideas.

Font experiments

Magazine header

As i have now decided on a name for my magazine, Scene, I have started to decide what font and style i want to use throughout my magazine. I will use a classic convention of magazines and put the header along the top of my magazine. As it is short, it will come on the left side of the paper.

I would like my font to be clear but stand out whether this be achieved by a interesting font, or just simply outlining the word in a bold colour.
Here are the more complex fonts i experimented with.

I have decided to keep the fonts black and white for know whilst i continue to experiment as this way i can just see which font looks best. I plan to take colours from the front page image and use that to create the colour scheme which means it will not be overpowering as it will only include 2-5 colours. This will help create a finished, professional look to my final draft.
A more basic font to these would work as it is similar to other magazines for example Q or NME do not have any complicated fonts which could either overpower or be lost within the front pages. It needs to be catchy and easy to identify.

Naming my magazine

Naming my magazine
After looking at music magazines I have found that they have a convention to often be short and catchy names. Magazines that I have come across this in are 'NME', 'Q' and 'MOJO'. These names work well as there short, catchy and memorably to a youth audience and therefore with hundreds of issues appearing they can easily be identified meaning eventually more front page space. Longer magazine names include “Kerrang” however this would be easily remebered and there are other things relating to kerang ie music channels etc. Although these names are longer I feel that they work well to there target audience as they have a punchy sound to them when said. Thinking about possible names for mine, I thought of the types of things or people that were associated with alternative indie music (without calling it indie!) and came up with “Indie Cindy” as a long one, however this isn’t very punchy as I would like it. The focus for a long time with this music was “scene kids” etc therefore I will work with SCENE for now and see if it is fitting and works well within my layout ideas.

Initial research- who my magazine is aimed at

Inital Reserch - Who's my magazine aimed at.
I chose to base my magazine around magazines I am familiar with so that I could easily use me as a target audience and see if it is the sort of thing that would attract me. My magazine therefore is going to be based on alternative/indie music magazine. Magazines such as NME and Q take a similar style, the closest to what I am trying to achieve therefore I will choose these to research. The target audiences for these are large, young audiences of both genres so I have to make sure I try and fulfill these particular audiences needs. I feel this is a suitable audience for the ideas of my magazine being on new artists and the upcoming festivals. The typical readers of NME are students who don’t have much money to spare, looking for cheap gigs etc. Local gigs also and festivals for when university or school is out. NME has a 65% male audience and 50% of there audience are 16-24. People in my age group I have decided to go with, 15-20, also have more inclination than older people to go to see bands and read music magazines, that is why i have decided to aim my magazine towards them. By choosing this as my age group it will affect the story that i put on my cover. I will chose a band or singer that will have the style of music that is in the charts at the moment, as it is this age group that is affected by chart music.
