Evaluation of Practice School Magazine
Media evaluation
Capturing the codes and conventions of a real magazine.
I feel I have done this well and for a first attempt, made it look similar to a layout of a final magazine. The image is ¾ up, which was in the project brief and is of 2 students from Chenderit School with a positive attitude. The bar code and price is placed in a typical way you would expect to see on a magazine which means that it can be easily identified for viewers. The headline is also in the conventional place of a real life magazine to catch the eye with heading and subheadings. The only thing that does not fit with conventions is colour. The colours used have don't have a strong link except for red black and white. However the image took was against a green background.
The composition of my image I feel works well and I have edited it by making the face images include finishing touches and also used a spot light tool which has made the surrounding of the image black and white and colour in the middle. This links in with my subtitle “puts the students in the spot light”. I feel this works well and is a good way of making the front cover catchy and different. The use of PhotoShop and indesign has helped me create this and make it have a finished look. PhotoShop helped with the edit of the image colours and skin tones etc to ensure that the picture seen as it was the main thing, be successful. Indesign allowed me to place texts against the borders and add layers on top of the image. It was hard to use PhotoShop at first, as it needs to use a lot of different tools to create a particular effect. Indesign was slightly like publisher however it was hard to get used to and learn how to add things in. It has been helpful going through the programs before our final piece of coursework. It took a while to get use to the software which means that I will become quicker and use it better and to the best advantage when coming to do it next.
If I were to do this again I would make the colours link better and also add more creative fun images onto the front page and change fonts and positioning of the writing. Also I would change where I have put the competition title and make it more eye catching. Overall I am happy with what I have produced. It could be a lot more professional looking but by doing this project I have successfully learnt how to use programs which will help with a professional look. Also I will think more carefully about the image to make it fit in better and look more active rather then a still medium close up image.
Contents page evaluation
I feel this is not as strong as the front page I have done but there are some things that fit in with the conventions of a magazine contents page. Contents pages need to be more packed with context and also pages that are noted on the front page and page numbers. If I had planned this out more I would of thought more about what would have been in the magazine. It has an editor’s comment, which you would usually find just to explain what you could expect, the purpose and audience to. The word “Spotlight” is highlighted linking with the subtitle on the front page and the pictures are a lot more fun and about the students, which is what the magazine promised.
I really like the layout of the images, as it is different however the background could be more fun, eye catching and interesting. Also the font could be bigger and different more linking colours. Therefore if I were to do this again it would have to resemble a real magazine contents page more and contain a lot more entertainment features and wording.
