1. Title of the magazine
When coming up with the name of the magazine I had to think about what words associated or linked in with my genre of music choice. For example I wouldn’t want to name it something like “Rave” or “Hip-Hop” if my focus was Alternative. I had to think of conventions of the genre. I then had to think of how was best to portray this, as I wouldn’t want something bright and dance like, but at the same time, I didn’t want something to basic and link into a genre such as acoustic. I felt the name scene had associations to the genre of music and the colors picked don’t scream vibrant rocky connotations, but at the same time stand out and link in with basic color schemes throughout.

2. Mis-en-scene – images
I wanted to capture a youthful looking magazine and use images that would attract a certain audience and introduce the summer period. I thought that the perfect thing for this was festival. Therefore the pictures I took, not necessarily to be on my double page spread, but to surround my other pages context, should capture this atmosphere. I wanted the excitement and buzz to start from the look of this magazine issue and reflect the theme. The picture above reflect this as it shows young girls at a festival having fun and indulged naturally in the camping scene. The main image of my front page shows a new comer, young typical alternative Indy look and clothing and hair styles may reflect what is popular with the target audience image. This way they can relate to the issue.

3. Costumes and props
I have used images that include things such as headphones, guitars and tents which all reflect an atmosphere and theme that I am trying to create throughout. Costumes- the typical style an Indy boy would be seen in or classed as wearing or looking like. I felt his image fitted in with popular artists in this genre such as John Mayer and Kings of Leon lead singer Caleb.

4. People.
I chose to use new artists as this could intrigue fans of this genre to want to know who the new artists are. Also in the contents page using a band that was new to the scene (noisettes) and just breaking through made it seem like this is what the issue would be about. By having a girl band on the contents page as well, it shows there is a lot of different sounds for every reader to look out for.

5. Title font and style.
The master head font is simplistic and shows a sense of simple, fresh and new. This is a connotation to alternative music and also I feel the color scheme works because it isn’t to over the top and will not be lost within the pictures. The color scheme is also simple and isn’t a bright and vibrant feeling to the overall style of the magazine.

6. Written Content
I have included many music magazine conventions within my magazines with features such as band interviews, gig reviews and festival guides. I have made sure the interview I typed up was not all about the music and more about knowing this new coming act and more interesting questions which would be fitting and interesting to the target audience.

7. Music genre and how your magazine suggests it
I feel my contents page and double page spread are the most successful at fulfilling my magazine genre in the way the layout is and the use of color. Also the context that is included portrays this sense of summer and new acts and gigs. It also includes guitars and vocal images, which would mean that if my genre were, dance, these sorts of band look and color scheme isn’t very fitting to what I should be achieving. Likewise with rap and hip-hop you would be expecting DJ’s bright colors, lighting etc.

8. Layout
I feel I have followed a typical music magazine layout with a medium close up front cover with a focus on the face, to the positioning of text boxes, main headings and also competition banners etc all featuring on the front page. The main page has the stories on the left-hand side vertical third. It was fitting with the positioning of the image as well so it worked effectively. My double page spread however does not necessarily follow conventions, as it doesn’t have a full page of a picture to then being carried over to a full column. I felt that none of my images would be catching enough or strong enough to use as a full-page image which at the same time would capture my theme. Again with my contents page, I feel to some extent this both fulfills and challenges the conventions I found whilst researching NME. I have used features such as pictures, page numbers and editors comment, but I have used limited page numbers and story lines on the right hand side. I felt this was because there would be too much information and wanted to carry it over onto a second contents page like I found they do in magazines such as ELLE and music magazine Q.

9.Contents page in depth
Furthermore my contents page still fits within the color scheme and on my main pictures used on the page itself; they are all fitting within a summer festival theme or a new coming band. All the other stories I have listed I have tried to make fitting with things such as line-ups, local gigs and reviews. With the editors comment I tried to make it colloquial to make it more appealing with the target audience and also add a fun image in to make it more easy to form a reader writer feel. This is to show that the festival experience has in fact coming from a first handed source of where the “editor” (me) has been.
